All Intel Z590 motherboards at a glance Review Game-Tech
At CES 2021, the mainboard manufacturers presented their new products with the new Intel 500 chipsets. The PCIe 4.0 suitability and the four additional lanes of the Intel Rocket Lake-S processors result in new possibilities, which is why the boards are not just a new infusion of the Z490 boards. All Z590 boards are listed below to get an overview of the most important equipment items.
Not only do the Intel Rocket Lake-S CPUs bring innovations with them, but the Z590 also has a few changes ready and the new platform introduces changes. The chipset itself provides up to 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes, to which the 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes of a Rocket Lake-S CPU are added. The fact that the chipset itself does not offer Gen4 lanes means that a board provides more than one M.2 slot with Gen4, in which case GPU lanes are sacrificed. However, a slot is always connected directly to the CPU. With an Intel Comet Lake-S CPU, it should lie fallow. Another new feature is that Thunderbolt 4 can now be offered. This can only be found on the more expensive mainboards or z. B. Mini-ITX boards. The USB 3.2 Gen2x2 (20G) standard is also one of the innovations of the chipset. A maximum of three of these can be implemented directly.
Also, the network connectivity is usually drilled out. Most Intel Z590 motherboards use a 2.5Gbit NIC. If a WLAN adapter is installed, at least WiFi 6 is always used (AX200 and AX201), sometimes even Wii 6E (AX210). There is also a novelty in the audio codecs. Often the Realtek ALC4080 or 4082 can be found, which is an improvement on the ALC1220. Of course, the power supply was also made an issue again. MSI says, for example, that at least 12 phases are always installed. All further information is available on the following pages. We start with boards up to € 200.
Intel Z590 motherboards up to € 200
You can already see the change of platform on the entry-level boards. Almost all of them rely on a 2.5Gbit NIC. The Z490 motherboards did not yet have this in this form. There are also always at least two M.2 slots available. USB 3.2 Gen2x2 is not always installed, but very often. In some cases, the connection is offered as an internal header to a USB-C socket with high speed on the front panel. The ASRock Z590M-ITX / ax is interesting here, as the Mini-ITX mainboards are often only found in higher-priced regions.
The MSI Z590-A Pro also makes a good impression. Like the other boards in this price range, this one only uses the Realtek ALC897 audio codec. The better and newer codecs can only be found at the next price level. The two boards, which are equipped with a WLAN adapter, rely directly on Wifi 6E.
Intel Z590 motherboards € 200 to € 300
The so-called gaming mainboards start from 200 €. Except for the Gigabyte Z590I Aorus Ultra, at least 12 phases are now always used. Three M.2 slots are now standard here. Also, USB 3.2 Gen2x2 is always on board.
Compared to the previous price level, 2.5Gbit LAN is now always installed. You always come across at least one ALC1200, ALC1220, or the new ALC4080.
Intel Z590 motherboards € 300 to € 400
Thunderbolt 4 is also to be found in this price range for the first time. It also gets interesting with the PCIe slots. There are now divisions so that you could also operate a multi-GPU team with two eight PCIe 4.0s, even if SLI or Crossfire currently no longer play a role. But you could also use other NVMe SSDs if the existing ones are not enough.
The voltage supply is also becoming more and more opulent overall. You can now use up to 17 phases to elicit all the power from the CPU used. The MSI MEG Z590I Unify also sets the bar very high when it comes to RAM. Up to 5600 MHz should be possible.
Intel Z590 motherboards € 400 to € 500
There are only four mainboards left here. But these belonged to the upscale section in the last series. It is interesting that except for the Gigabyte Z90 Aorus Master, all of them rely on Thunderbolt 4. In contrast to the others, this one offers a 10Gbit NIC. The rather rare killer network chips are used in the ASRock Z590 Taichi. WiFi 6 (E) is available in all.
Intel Z590 motherboards over 500 €
Over 500 € is actually still poorly described. The four boards all cost over € 900. The ASUS ROG Maximus XIII Extreme becomes a Glacial with a water cooler and costs another € 500 more. The voltage supply is made up of 20 phases, whereby the MOSFETs always deliver at least 90A. 10Gbit LAN and Wifi 6E are always on board. The Realtek audio codecs are also supported by additional DACs. Thunderbolt 4 is also always there. The MSI MEG Z590 Godlike has an additional M.2, Xander, so that a total of up to six M.2 SSDs can be installed.
